In the late 1950s, the Swank Beach Motel was built here on the shore of Lake Superior.  It was purchased by Jim LaMotte in 1980 and underwent a number of changes, but the hotel room layout was largely unchanged up until the fall of 2020.  What initially began as a small project to redo one room turned into the most comprehensive change in the hotel’s history, and created a new lodging experience that’s amongst the best on the shore.

When we began the hotel remodel, it was a complete rethinking of what the property meant and why people came to it.  Like many of the older properties in the U.P., it was built in the style of a 1950’s motor lodge, and the rooms were merely a place to sleep.  Given the breathtaking location, it seemed like a missed opportunity to not have the rooms be a place that you’d want to linger in the morning and rush back to in the evening, so we made the decision to create six rooms from the original twelve.

Each unit is now a little over 500 square feet, and boasts a comfortable living area with modern furniture that’s well suited to lounging, along with a single king bed for when you’re ready to settle in for the night.  Other amenities include air conditioning, Wi-Fi suitable for streaming your favorite show or for getting some work done remotely, a large television, a french press coffee setup with freshly ground beans from The Jampot, a fridge and microwave.

While day to day life can feel hectic, we want you to be able to slow down while you’re here, to embrace the peace and quiet while not compromising on the things that make you comfortable.  Watch the waves roll in from your balcony and use your phone to order a cocktail or appetizer to be sent up to your room in the summer, or curl up on the sofa with one of our Pendleton blankets and watch the lake effect snow showers sweep across the frozen lake in the winter.  No matter what time of year you come, Fitzgerald’s can be a respite from your day to day grind and the opportunity to embrace the natural beauty that the Keweenaw has in spades.
